Author Bio

Evonne Blanchard was born and raised in England. She met her husband, an American whilst they were both volunteering at a children’s orphanage in Guatemala.  The writer lives north of Boston, Massachusetts with her husband and their two daughters, Lydia and Gwendolyn.  Other additions to the household include a crazy puppy called Bailey, a lovely cat called Arthur, and lots of fish!
The author has been fascinated by space ever since she was a little girl, mesmerized by clips of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walking on the moon. As a teenager, War of the Worlds, by H.G Wells became one of her favorite books and she adores the movie Mars Attacks.
When it came to creating her own aliens, the author decided on the warm and fuzzy type, rather than the war-like Martians. Uglesnoo, her main alien character is from Pluto. He’s very friendly and nice but a little crazy too! This was the beginning of Amelia’s Amazing Space Adventures, starring Amelia and her alien friend Uglesnoo, from Pluto in a series of ten exciting space adventures for children, ages 5-10.
Uglesnoo’s sister is very sick.  The only cure is a repelling crystal from Neptune.  To obtain the crystal Amelia and Uglesnoo must travel to the Moon, Sun and all the planets in the solar system.
Evonne’s favorite planet -or to be more accurate dwarf planet- is Pluto, because it has a blue sky and glaciers just like Earth! She was not happy when Pluto was downgraded. Uglesnoo, her alien creation from Pluto is still mad at the decision.  “Pluto is the most important place in the solar system.  It’s where everyone goes for their vacation!” He agrees with Alan Stern, a leading NASA scientist, “This definition (of Pluto as a dwarf planet) stinks…!”
The author is currently working on the fourth book in the series, Amelia, the Snapperjacks and the Molten Maze.  This book is set on the Sun.  How will Amelia and Uglesnoo manage to land on the boiling hot Sun, trade with the aliens, find the jars of Snapperjack honey and continue their quest to save Uglesnoo’s sister?  Find out… in Amelia’s next amazing space adventure!

From “Batter Up, Norman”

            “Here, I’ll show you what to do. First stand up on your hind legs,” instructed Matthew.

            Norman stood on his hind legs.

            Then Matthew put the bat into the bear’s front paws. “Now when the ball is thrown towards you, swing the bat and try to hit the ball. Remember to keep your eyes on the ball, Norman. After you hit it, run to first base as fast as you can,” said Matthew, pointing to first base. “Okay, let us know when you’re ready!”

            Norman walked up to home plate. The little bear took a few practice swings and then yelled, “Okay, I’m ready!”

            The pitcher threw the first pitch. It was a good one, but the little bear was so frightened to see the ball flying right at him that he squeezed his eyes shut.

            He swung the bat around wildly—and missed!

            “Try again!” yelled Matthew. “And don’t close your eyes!”

            The second pitch was a really good one, right over the plate. Norman kept his eyes open, but he looked right away as he swung his bat and the ball landed behind him.

            “I missed again,” he said sadly.

            “Just keep your eyes on the ball when you swing,” shouted Matthew.

            This time, when the pitcher threw the ball, Norman kept his eyes wide open and glued on the ball. He gave a mighty swing.

I didn’t begin my career as an author by writing stories. First, I was a storyteller. Let me explain. Many years ago, when our children were very young, I would sit on their beds at bedtime and tell them a story. Instead of reading a story written by someone else, I preferred to make up my own story right on the spot. They were stories about animals who learned to fly, children who talked to birds, alligators who were friends with elephants, and even one about a horse that learned to jump like a kangaroo. Our children loved them. So I made up lot of stories. Then there was a long period of time when there was no one who wanted to listen to my stories because they had all grown up!

But then, something wonderful happened. We had our first grandchild—and I became Grandpa Bernie. One day, one of my daughters said, “Dad, you have so many stories. I think other children would like to hear them.” That’s when I became an author.

At the age of 93, I am still playing tennis (doubles only) five times a week in a 60+ league. I have been married 64 years to my wonderful wife, Faigie, had three children, and five grandchildren. I continue to sit in my favorite chair, with a large pad on my lap, and a pen in my hand, lean back, and let my imagination soar.

Excerpt – Discovering Snow

Brittany was very special to Lace. She had graciously accepted Lace into her home with Love and Man. Lace had since learned that Britt the Kit had also saved her father Sky when he was just a kitten.

An evergreen tree branch hit the kitchen bay window. The kitten jumped on to the ledge and looked outside.

“Wow, everything is so white! Just like me! It must be? Yesss! It’s SNOW. Now I understand why Papa called me Snow.” The white kitten got chills all over her body. “Snow is all white and pretty like me! I want to touch and feel it,” Lace whispered.

The kitten ran over to the cat door which was part of the kitchen door of their house. She placed her paw on the clear plastic door and pushed. “Ah, it’s open.” Her folks had forgotten to lock it before they went to sleep. “Should I?” Lace knew it was the wrong thing to do, but she was so curious about the snow falling just a short distance away in their backyard. “Yes, I’ll chance it. Just, for a few minutes.” She took a deep breath and slipped through the flapping door.

Once outside, Lace ran to the snow and placed her paw on the sparkling white powder. “Oooo, it’s cold, like Mama said. Ah, it melts, too.” Cautiously she moved out from under the covered porch and jumped up onto the stone wall that ran the length of their home.

As the snow gently fell on the kitten, she began to purr. It was cold, but pleasant. It landed on the top of her head and body. “So this is snow. I like it.”

Tammy Cortez

Tammy Cortez is a Fremont, California native now living in Georgetown, Texas. She grew up living in suburbia but spent every weekend at their horse ranch 30 minutes away in the country. Tammy competed in team penning events, winning many of them, including 1st place in a larger event resulting in her first silver belt buckle, still one of her prized possessions.

She has been married for 25 years to a guy she met in the 7th grade and remained friends with through middle and high school. They have two daughters, 24 & 12.Tammy spent the first two years of her marriage as a Navy wife having lived at the well known and much loved NAS Miramar (now MCAS Miramar) and then NAS Lemore, both in California.

Outside of enjoying time with her family, Tammy loves repurposing old furniture and other fun finds as well as painting. Not painting on canvas, though she would love to give that a whirl, but home interior painting. “It’s the one thing everyone dreads, but I find almost therapeutic,” she says.

She found, or re-found, her passion for writing when she decided to write a story intended as a gift for her youngest daughter. After discussing it with a couple of friends that had written books, she was convinced she should publish it. “When I started writing I found something I realize now, I had lost. Back in high school I had an English teacher, I wish I could remember her name, but she had us do this great writing exercise. We would close our eyes and lay our heads down on our desks. She would then read a few sentences that were descriptive of a location and situation, and then ask us to raise our heads and write what we saw. We would go through this process a few times and the end result was a story. When many of my classmates had 2 – 3 pages I had 6+ pages. I could write and write and write. Then I stopped. I guess it was so non-traditional I just never even considered it as a career. I write very much in the same manner now. Very off the cuff.”

The move to Texas took Tammy away from her Business Analyst job in Information Technology at an energy laboratory in California. This move opened up a door that never would have been considered before. Tammy found Waldorf Publishing through a friend and is working on a series of children’s books as well as some middle grade books. She is now dedicated to writing when she isn’t volunteering at her daughter’s school or spending time with family and friends.

Chapter 4 – Just LOVE

Biblical Explanation:

Hello Parents and Children J Dr. Donna here to talk to you about the word Love. Love can be heard and seen all around. You may love your parents, your school, your animal, your friends, and even your annoying siblings! However, there is someone we must love FIRST, before EVERYTHING… that someone is God.

God wants us to love him because God loves us! God Is Love. God tells us that we show love by sharing, speaking kind words, and even showing forgiveness to others who have hurt us. When you do acts of love, not only will it cause others to feel good, but YOU will feel good too! The more love we give, the more love we feel.

Proverbs 14:21 – It is wrong to say bad things about your neighbors. Be kind to the poor, and you will be blessed

Proverbs 16:24 – Kind words are like honey; they are easy to accept and good for your health

Proverbs 25:11 – Saying the right thing at the right time is like a golden apple in a silver setting

Parents and Children: Try this activity –

1.                   Think about a person you know who you can show love to. What is one loving thing you can do for them this week?

2.                  Then think about someone who you don’t know that you can help. For example, Parents, is there someone on your job who could use your assistance? Children, is there someone in your class who could use your loving help?

Dr. Donna’s Advice for Girls/Women:

Proverbs 31:20 states: “She always gives to the poor and helps those who need it” and Proverbs 31:26 explains: “She speaks with wisdom and teaches others to be loving and kind.” Both verses offer guidance to girls and women that love is shown by being generous in the words that we speak and by the actions we demonstrate towards others

Dr. Donna’s Advice for Boys/Men:

Proverbs 15:18 verse explains that: “A quick temper causes fights, but patience brings peace and calm.” This verse helps us to understand that boys and men can show love by being more patient (slow to anger)
