Promo Post Those Who Are Left

About the Book

Title: Those Who Are Left
Author: Josh Stricklin
Genre: Horror
Thinking back to when everything changed, Derrick can never pinpoint if it was the pickaxe swinging toward his own face that alerted him or if he knew moments earlier when he saw the weapon hurtle toward the barn cat. Either way, he quickly realized that the man he was facing—a farm employee he knew well—was not only no longer a friend, he wasn’t even human any more.
An apocalyptic tale that surprises you with humor when it’s not terrifying you with horror, Those Who Are Left follows Derrick as he and two strangers venture through the major cities of the South in search of family and safety. But not all the human factions can be trusted, and if the trio can’t figure out what’s driving the different groups they could end up with enemies on all sides.
But even in a chaotic world of murderous screamers and posturing humans, there’s always time to play a few games of bowling before the slaughter begins…right?

Author Bio

Josh Stricklin is an American author and musician with degrees in English literature and advertising from the University of Southern Mississippi. His first novel, Those Who Are Left, made its debut in 2015. The terrifying follow up, The King of Evil, is available from Silver Leaf Books. He’s currently hard at work finishing his first series…or more likely reading comic books and wearing a Seahawks jersey.

Book Excerpt Monsterland

Book Excerpt

What were the interlopers doing here? Billy thought furiously. This was their territory. The humans didn’t belong in the swamp. The moon continued its trip to the heavens, the familiar agony beginning in his chest. Billy fought the demons churning within his body, feeling the pain of metamorphosis. He curled inward, hunching his shoulders, the curse of his nature making his spine pull until his tendons and muscles tore from their human positions to transform into something wicked. A howl erupted from his throat, followed by another, and then another. Grabbing handfuls of dirt, he tried to fight the awful change, but, as the sun dipped to its fiery death, the moon took control of his life, and the unnatural force tore through his unwilling body. Reason fled; his heart raced. Falling on his hands and knees, he let loose a keening cry as his face elongated, his body changing into a canine, fangs filling his mouth. He raced in a circle in a demented dance, knowing his fellow pack members did the same thing. Slowing, he regulated his labored breathing, forcing the icy calmness he needed to keep some semblance of reason. He peered through the dense brush. Lights from the search party bobbed in the distance. The odor, the stench of humanity, filled the clearing.

He turned, digging furiously on the ground, throwing dirt on the flames, hiding their existence. It was no good. Discovery would ruin everything. No one could live with their kind. Humans brought disease, humans brought anger, humans brought hatred. They were there; he could smell them, see their clumsy bodies invading his home. “They’ve found us,” he growled in the special language they used. “Run!” he barked as he turned to his pack, watching his friends’ naked skin transform until it was covered with the same silvered fur. They cried out in unison at the pain, howling with the injustice, and then ran in fear from the interlopers threatening their habitat.

Book Excerpt Darkview: Psychosis

Book Excerpt

Jack,

Where are you? Why have you abandoned me? Why, Jack? Why? You promised you would never leave me … that you would never hurt me. Help me, Jack. I’m scared! I can’t remember how I got here. I’m in that place again, the place I spent my last days. But it’s different. It’s dark, always dark, not as I remember it at all. I’m in pain, Jack! A pain you cannot understand. I don’t know how or why I’m here. Please help me. Please come take me home!

I love you, Jack

FAA Chloe

* * * * * * * * *

At the end of every letter Chloe sent Jack, she wrote FAA – Forever and Alwaysbefore her name. It was their little peace of mind, their little piece of trust. To anyone who read the correspondence, which passed between the couple, it may have seemed over the top, but to Jack it meant the world. He used to spend half the year working in Africa, so to him, FAA meant Chloe was waiting for him, that she was faithful and devoted. Perhaps it was because Jack secretly felt a little insecure. FAA gave him the reassurance he needed, especially when so far away from home.

However, Chloe had stopped writing to Jack six years ago, so this was bizarre. He could not explain it. The strangest thing about this particular letter wasn’t the bloody fingerprint stains, or the fact that it was written in Chloe’s handwriting, but the date on which he had received it: June 6, 2001. Exactly six years since her death.

* * * * * * * * *

Jack opened his eyes to find himself gazing into a large, old, dirty cracked mirror, in a rundown, dilapidated public toilet. His dry hands grasped the sides of a rusty metal sink beneath him. The slight haze in his eyes cleared, revealing a dim light flickering above his head. There was a faint cold breeze, causing the light to swing from side to side. Jack looked deeper into his reflection, ignoring all the imperfections in the mirror, and the strange substance smeared all over it. In a trance, he stroked drops of water, slowly dripping from the tap below, cupping his hands to catch as much moisture as he could. He straightened up and sighed, pale blue eyes continuing to lock into the tattered mirror.

He stared deep into his reflection, as if he were searching for his missing soul. He was not aware of where he was or how he had got there. Nor was he aware of the stench of stale urine that permeated his nostrils. Jack could only think of one thing: the letter. He constantly went over it in his head, character for character, word for word, as if Chloe herself were speaking to him…

Bathgate&Hall_Author-Picture

R.J. Bathgate, born and bred in Scotland, is the creator and co-author of Darkview: Psychosis. A father of two, and enormously proud of his heritage, he has studied psychology, social sciences, and is currently working towards an advanced diploma in psychotherapeutic counselling and hypnotherapy. His heart lies with new experiences and an interest into the unknown, particularly with writing. He has travelled the world from the dusty, wildlife-filled plains of Zambia, to the glaciers of Alaska, and the soaring peaks of the Canadian Rockies. He is extremely fond of NHL ice hockey, video games, good films, fine wine, and Jack Daniels. He originally wrote Darkview as a screenplay when living in Canada, but upon returning to Scotland, researched mental health issues, namely psychosis and schizophrenia. Inspired by this research, he brought in his lifelong friend, M.J. Hall, to help create a more realistic take on Darkview. The result is a story that combines traditional Scottish history with real life, catastrophic world events, told through the eyes of the protagonist, Jack Cyrus.
M.J. Hall was born in Stockport, Greater Manchester, at the turn of the eighties. Despite being born in England, he identifies more with his ‘adopted’ country, Scotland – he’s lived there since he was four, and his late maternal grandfather was Scottish, too. He presently lives in Edinburgh and is currently studying Environmental Science at the Open University, but has always dreamed of a career in music or writing, or both. He is vegetarian, loves animals (especially cats) and is devoted to his black and white moggy, Tahlula. He humbly admits being just a small voice in a big chorus, and his life changed for the better, or at least would never be the same, when his lifelong and best friend – R.J. Bathgate – invited him to collaborate on Darkview.

Book Excerpt Elysium Dreams

Book Excerpt

His cell phone rang as he left the morgue.  His wife’s shrill voice came over the line.  She was upset because their daughter hadn’t come home yet.  He assured her that the girl was probably fine and that he’d check her normal hangouts before hanging up.
He didn’t bother to mention that he already knew where the girl was; he had driven to her location while talking to the harpy he considered his wife.  As he sat inside his Cadillac Escalade, he could see her through the large plate glass windows that spilled light into the darkened street.  The SUV lights were off, but the engine was running.  He lit a cigar.  It was one of two places he could smoke; his wife hated the smell of cigar smoke.  However, he had bought the Escalade himself, so she allowed him to smoke in it and in the backyard.  As long as he picked up the stubs of course, if he let any fall into the yard or left one on the patio, there was hell to pay.
As he smoked, he watched a group of teenage girls inside a pizzeria.  The youngest was only fifteen.  She was supposed to be home over an hour ago.  Her mother was going to be livid.  There would be shouting and screaming.  After all, there was a serial killer on the loose.
This girl though, wasn’t his target.  She wasn’t his type.  She was too young, too wild for his tastes.  He preferred them to be prim and proper and full grown women.  Besides, she was his daughter. No one else in the group fit his purpose either, but their waitress, she was a different story.  Her blond hair was pulled back in a very severe ponytail.  Her face was hard set as she disapprovingly served the group of unsupervised girls.  They were a little unruly in her opinion and it showed on her face.
Then again, the fifteen year old currently shoving a slice of cheese pizza into her mouth, ensured that the waitress was safe, at least for the night.  His wife had been insistent that he go find the girl and bring her home.  If he didn’t return with the girl, there would be hell to pay.

Author Bio

H JamesHadena James began writing at the age of eight. By the time she graduated high school, she had published a couple of short stories in literary magazines. She completed writing her first novel at seventeen. Hadena began college as an English major, but quickly changed to a history major. However, she continued to write and took several extra classes in creative writing.
College showed her that while she could write short stories, novel writing was truly where her heart lay. She graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in European History with minors in German and Russian Studies. During this time, she received a couple of contract offers from publishing houses, but ultimately turned them all down.
In August 2012, she self-published her first novel. In retrospect, she is appreciative of the contracts offers she received when she was younger, but believes she made the right decision with self-publishing.
When she isn’t busy writing, Hadena enjoys playing in a steel-tip dart league. She loves to travel throughout North America and Europe. Her favorite cities to visit are Chicago, Illinois and Berlin, Germany. She is an avid reader, with her favorites being classic literature; Edgar Allen Poe, HP Lovecraft, Gaston LeRoux, and Jane Austen; modern favorites include Clive Barker, James Patterson, Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams. Her favorite book is “Good Omens” by Neil Gaimen and Terry Pratchett. She writes all of her books while listening to music and the bands tend to get “honorable mentions” within the pages. Some of her favorite bands are Nine Inch Nails, KMFDM, Rammstein, U2, Marilyn Manson, Oomph!, and Rob Zombie.

Book Excerpt The Torment of Rachel Ames

Book Excerpt

Rachel Ames knows she’s making a terrible mistake, but that’s never stopped her before. Even as she speeds down the empty highway, she’s certain nothing good will come of this trip. She can’t say why she has this belief, only that it’s deeply rooted, part of a visceral animal instinct clawing away at her insides. Call it intuition. Or call it common sense, doesn’t matter. Can’t change the fact that it’s the truth.
She refuses to change her destination, even if the rising sense of dread causes her heart to beat right out of her chest. She’s committed, this much is a fact, so she pushes aside all thought of turning around and focuses on the road ahead.
She checks the map on her phone, taking comfort in the little blue dot on the screen that symbolizes the exact spot in the world occupied by her aging Honda Accord with faded red paint, bad muffler and squeaking brakes. The dot sails along a straight white line surrounded by an ocean of green. She appreciates the simplicity of the image, the perfection of it. An object moving at a steady rate along a direct path toward a specific destination. No hurdles. No obstacles to navigate. Not even an intersection or a fork in the road. There are only two decisions to make. To continue forward or stop the car and go back.
And there’s no chance in hell she’s going back.
Her two gentlemen passengers are the perfect companions. Silent, good-looking and only there to cater to her whims and needs. They sit together in the seat next to her, sharing the seatbelt. That might have been overdoing it, but strapping them in together makes her laugh, so she forgives herself the indulgence. This is her journey, her time, so acting odd is her prerogative.
Besides, the two of them are the perfect complements. Daniels and Underwood. Booze and typewriter. Soul mates bound by common history and mutual reliance.
The Underwood typewriter was a great find her sophomore year in college, given to her by Professor McNeely’s widow soon after his very public death from a massive aneurism. It’d happened right in the middle of her creative writing class, just as the old bastard was finally saying something nice about her novel-in-progress. Mid-sentence, he’d slapped a hand to his head, made a small grunt and rolled his eyes back in their sockets. At first, she’d thought he was mocking her work, but then his back arched and he collapsed to the floor. After that came the convulsions, followed by the shit and urine filling his pants as her classmates screamed. Then, as the good book says, the lights went out and Elvis left the building.
But unlike Elvis, the man wasn’t much loved. A taskmaster who hated any writer beside himself, he used critiques as an assault rifle to mow down any young soul with the temerity to attempt the art that, in his mind, belonged only to him and a handful of his peers. Sure there were the appropriate candlelight vigils and the church service to honor the brave soul who died fighting the good fight in his ivory tower, but right under the surface, the humor rolled dark and furious.
I heard that the last pages he read really blew his mind.
You know that saying, would it kill you to say something nice?
Rachel guessed it had.
