Neely Powell is the pseudonym for co-writers Leigh Neely and Jan Hamilton Powell. The best friends met when they both worked at a rock ‘n roll radio station in Chattanooga. It turned out their husbands were long-lost high school buddies, and Jan and Leigh were both writing romantic fiction in their spare time. A partnership was born.

CHAPTER ONE









Jamestown, Virginia, July 1740





Tsura Harris lifted the hem of her green skirt and stepped up onto the wooden plank. She clutched her reticule in her right hand and reached for the rope with her left. The planked bridge swayed as the boat rocked against the seas. She stared at the water below. White-capped waves crashed along the ship’s hull, rocking the boat. She inhaled, forced her chin up, and took another step. She walked the short distance to the boardwalk, releasing the breath she’d held when her boot touched land. She planted both feet upon the wooden dock and set her shoulders, but the reminder of why she was here intensified the weight upon her chest. Despair was her shadow, and it was with her today.

“Sister!”

Her brother’s deep, masculine shout came from above.

She shaded her eyes from the hot afternoon sun and peered up at him. His stature always shocked her. Micah Walker was six foot with broad shoulders and strong arms, a spitting image of their father, Kade. His white shirt gaped open to show the tanned skin beneath, a sign of too many days out on the water. Long blond hair waved in the breeze. Her handsome brother had his pick of the ladies, but still hadn’t settled down. It was a shame. She knew he wanted children and a wife of his own, but his heart belonged to the sea and time would lend him those favors only when he was ready.

“You must wait,” he called and raced past his men carrying crates of goods onto the wharf.

She placed her bag onto the wooden walk and clasped her gloved hands together.

He reached her, his cheeks glowing and dark eyes lit with mischief. Before she could discourage him, he picked her up and swung her around. Her boots kicked the bag, knocking it over, as his strong arms held her tight.

Micah had always been affectionate. He never shied away from holding her hand, kissing her cheek, or teasing her like a brother would. He’d come to her side when she needed him the most. When her life had fallen apart, and she couldn’t see past her own misery to pick herself up. He had carried her, and she loved him for it.

“You cannot go off without wishing me well.” He smiled down at her.

“If you would simply release me, I’d be able to make it so,” she retorted. He was the only one, aside from her mother and father, who she allowed to touch her.

“Very well, nit.” He set her in front of him. The nickname he used for her was one of endearment and came from her pestering him as a child.

“Thank you.” She smoothed her skirt before bringing her eyes to meet his.

“You do not need to do this.”

She glanced away unable to stare at him any longer.

“Come sail with me.”

She shook her head. The urge to leave caused her legs to shake. She couldn’t be around him any longer. His cheerful disposition haunted her and made her think of things she’d rather forget.

“I know you don’t want to speak of this, but—”

“No, Micah.”

“Tsura, you need to forgive—”

“Forgiveness is not within my heart.”

“It surely is.”

She shook her head, careful not to release the many pins holding her thick corkscrew curls in a loose chignon.

“It is in all of us.”

She glared at her brother.

“Do not speak to me of forgiveness, brother. My heart is cold to it.”

His dark eyes watered, and she knew her words had hurt him, but she didn’t care. It was better this way—it was easier.

“Will you not reconsider?”

 “No.”

“Please stay. I will protect you.”

Protection was not what she needed. She could care less if she died. It’d be a relief from the constant pain she felt each day.

“I should’ve taken you to mother and father.”

“Do not speak to them of my presence here.”

“They will understand.”

“Not one word.”

Micah sighed. “As you wish.”

“I must go.” Anger pressed on her spine, and she straightened.

His shoulders dropped.

“Be safe. Trust no one.”

She nodded.

I’ve always wanted to be a writer. That was right after I realized that becoming a fairy ballerina or a princess wasn’t going to happen. But being a writer meant I could go places in my head and be other people as much as I wanted. I could even be a fairy ballerina or a princess! My stories have always had romance and history in them. I feel that one sparks the other. I’m not sure I’d really want to live in the past with no running water, take-out menus, flush toilets, hair dryers or antibiotics, but it sure is fun to dream. Besides, swashbuckling pirates and Regency men in their tight, buckskin breeches are hot.
I’m a native of the Boston area. Its history has inspired my writing, and probably influenced my decision to become a high school British Literature teacher so I could pay the bills. I’ve also been an accounts receivable clerk, a receptionist and telephone operator (before cell phones), head of an elementary school library, and president of a food pantry, not in that order. I received a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing degree in Popular Fiction at the fabulous Stonecoast program in Maine, where I met many talented writers, who encouraged me and made my writing better. And now I’m an author writing about dark heroes, feisty heroines, magic, and other fantastical things.

"Why are you so scared?" Even with lust surging through his veins, the need to show her gentleness overcame him. His hands lifted to her face and cupped her cheeks. The pads of his thumbs stroked the softness of her skin.
She sighed and leaned into his palm. "I'm not," she whispered as her eyes closed. "I fear nothing." 
He smiled. "Then why are you trembling?" As he drew a line over her bottom lip, her tongue darted out to taste the tip of his thumb. His cock jerked at the contact.
He was a bastard to find satisfaction in her reaction, but her heated response made his chest expand and a smug grin tug at his lips. He drew her closer. Her sexy gasp assured Kian she wasn't immune to his presence.

“Bow before your master!” One of the guards spat an order.
“I bow before no one,” Ciaran muttered without turning. That was one thing he refused to do. Ever. No matter how many whips sliced his flesh.
Instantly, he felt a fierce blow to his inner knee. His leg bent, and he went down. Ciaran gritted his teeth at the impact with the hard floor, and before the guard could deliver another blow, grabbed for the nearest weapon.
Suddenly fire flashed through the space. As one, the guards sank to the ground, bowing their heads.
“Enough!” Huge eyes appeared in the air, above them.
Ciaran frowned. Stood up.
The eyes narrowed. Green flames consumed the irises, and for a second he thought the room would catch fire.
“Out!” A sharp order rang out, and was followed before the echo subsided.
The moment Ciaran was left alone, shadows began swirling, the eyes got smaller, until a figure stepped out of the darkness. He thought he was prepared for whatever was coming. A two-headed ogre wouldn’t have surprised him, but when the shadows dissipated, and his eyes locked with those of the creature he’d been summoned by, he forgot whatever it was he wanted to say.
Her eyes were no longer round, but almond-shaped, slightly tilted downward toward her straight but narrow nose. Those eyes missed nothing—and right now, they were focused on him. Not burning, but the way her irises caught the glare of light, it appeared to glow with a cat-like luster.
In vibrant copper-red, the strands that escaped her knee-length braid danced like flames against her flawless, porcelain skin, conjuring up an image of a fragile, ethereal beauty.
One look at her, and Ciaran knew there was nothing fragile about her. She radiated power, and he had no trouble seeing why the guards bowed before her. Why everyone was afraid to even mention her name. The raw energy flowing around her was nothing he’d ever experienced. No demon he’d met possessed a smidgeon of it.
He was screwed, he concluded, determined to get this over with as quickly as possible.
“What do you want from me?” he demanded, finally coming to his senses.
She approached, no hesitation in her lithe, tall body. It moved with hypnotizing grace, accentuated by her simple leather pants and top that hugged her like a second skin. If he thought she had power before, it was nothing compared with the sizzle of energy that shot through him when she stretched out her hand, and gently touched his cheek.
It took everything he had to keep his body stone-still. He dared not even breathe. He felt if he did, she could actually bring him to his knees. And as seconds ticked by, her lips curled into a lazy smile, transforming her face from beautiful to stunning. She was a vision—a vision he expected to morph into a nightmare at any moment.

Book Excerpt

I stood from my perch on my ancient bed, wincing as it creaked behind me. My footsteps were silent as I crossed the room. I stood at my doorway and listened. I could only barely hear my mother sniffle, and my father’s whispers. If curiosity killed the cat, I must have had some feline DNA. With only a second of hesitation, I inched open my door, pausing for a moment each time it squeaked. With only just enough room to fit my tiny body through, I stepped into our dark hallway and tiptoed toward the living room. My heart was thundering viciously against my eardrums, recreating the theme music from an action movie. The screams from my father earlier that night had brought back all the fear I had had for him as a child. I was only a foot from the living room doorway when I could finally understand their hushed tones, but only barely over the sound of my racing heart.  
“Robert, I…I.” My mother sobbed.
“Helen.” My father warned.
“I can’t do this to her. It’s her birthday. I’ve never ignored her birthday.”
“You will, and that is precisely why we must do it now. We are out of time. Any day now the spells will begin to wear. This is the only way. What other reason would we have to leave her?”
“I don’t want to leave her.” My mother cried. “That’s the problem.”
“You will do as I say!” My father shouted causing me to jump. He quickly quieted himself. “She cannot know the truth. Do you understand me? Not yet. You will tell her what I tell you to tomorrow.”
“What if she doesn’t believe us? You know I’m—“
“Make it convincing.”
“And if I don’t?”
My father growled. Something fell to the floor. I heard a hollow echo and the sound of something rolling against the hardwood. I could distinctly hear someone choking. It took only a second for me to realize it was my mother; my mother was choking. My father was the one choking her. I felt my eyes begin to swell.
“You. Will. Convince. Her.” My father said firmly. “Or you will suffer the consequences.”
I heard my mother gasp for breath a moment later. “What am I to tell her?”
“We will tell her that you have cancer. She won’t question that we must leave for your treatment.”
I felt a frown develop on my face. I wished then that I could have done something, anything, to help my mother and ruin whatever dastardly plans my father had, but I didn’t, being the coward that I was. I was too afraid to move; too afraid to stand up to him. I was too lost in my own cowardice to move in any direction but backward, right onto the floorboard that creaked. The room began to haze until I was surrounded by darkness.

Author Bio

Okay, I’m actually kidding, but while you’re  here, there are a few things about me for those who don’t know. I am currently a 911 dispatcher for a local county in Southwest Missouri. I spend my days with my girlfriend, my cat (shown left), and my leopard gecko. Writing has been a dream of mine since I first developed a love of reading; I’m guessing around the age of ten. With both of my parents being English majors, it was hard to ignore the call of the word world. So, here we are, nearly a decade later, and I’m finally reaching for the dream half of my life in the making.
To all of my friends and my family who have been by my side through this journey, thank you for your support. And to you reading this now, thank you for taking the time from your day. If you have big dreams, remember you can do anything with determination and a whole lot of guts. I hope I can inspire others the way that other authors have inspired me with not just my writing, but with life itself.
