Book Excerpt Harm

I'm happy to host a snippet today from YA dystopian thriller "Harm". Enjoy!

Book Excerpt

The old geezer smiled. They'd found him nestled in a crevice between two shacks fondling his garland of boots. "Brownie don't cheat." He eyed her bare toes. "You need boots, I got boots. Cheap, cheap. 600q."
"Rat bastard." Ben grumbled. "They don't cost more than a hundred in the city. Let's find someone else."
"Ben." Niko placed a hand on his chest. "Buy the shoes."
With obvious reluctance he paid the man. 600q was expensive but she knew Brownie, as repulsive as he was, was the cheapest they were going to get. Her naked toes marked desperation and the other sellers would charge accordingly.
Money was exchanged for boots and for the first time in days Niko was able to stand on her own two feet. Ben was frowned as if the transaction left a bad taste in his mouth.
As they moved further from the city, always keeping the edge of the slums on one side and the line of hopefuls on the other, Niko began to notice a difference between the two beyond the obvious juxtaposition of seller and buyer. The Hopefuls, as she thought of the applicants waiting to enter the city, were dressed simply, but as neatly as possible as if wearing their best had some kind of bearing on their acceptance.
The inhabitants of the ghetto, by contrast wore things to catch the eye, odd color combinations and she fabrics that made her flinch at the sight of so little protection against the acid. Some had attached a hodge-podge of items to their clothes, she'd spotted one man with a garland of keys fastened to the front of his shirt and the tines clinked musically every time they touched. The very plainness of the Grey-man's costume she'd worn to escape Amaryllis made her stick out.
"You know what we're going to have to do." Niko began. Ben nodded.
"I'll stay behind." They both said.
