He slid closer. The line of his mouth thinned. “Why are you here, Taylor?”

The soft words reverberated in the room, in my head. Why was I here? My hands trembled. My heart beat loudly. So loudly I was afraid I wouldn’t hear myself speak or that I even could speak. Was I capable of answering that question with the truth? I closed my eyes and forced a deep breath in. Yes. The truth was something I could do. I just couldn’t look at him when I did it. “I want to have sex…with you.”

Relief gushed out of me, and my body relaxed. The truth of the words gave me boldness. Yes. Sex was what I wanted, what I needed. I opened my eyes, losing my breath somewhere in my chest, but I could feel the blow of his on my cheek. He had moved closer, his intensity overpowering me, his heat seeping into me. Except there was more I needed to say. I was getting lost in this thing—this magnetic force pulling us together. My speech was coming out all wrong. Actually, it wasn’t coming out at all. Yes, I wanted him, but I needed to tell him no.

I opened my mouth, but no words came. I was so dizzy. He leaned toward me, his lips hovering. All I could do was stare. In my entire life, I’d only ever kissed two guys, two very sweet, loving guys. But this was different. Brad was different. He wasn’t just a guy. He was a man. A fully grown, worldly, experienced, kissed-hundreds-maybe-thousands-of-women man.
