Book Excerpt
Bright
sniffed the stew. It smelled wonderful. Despite the lack of vegetation in the
area, they had somehow managed to season the stew just right. Still, it didn’t
smell like any sort of meat he’d had before. It definitely wasn’t caribou.
Bright
was seated next to the owner of the house. “What dish is this?” He lifted his
spoon to take a bite.
The
blond-haired man grinned, almost evilly. “It’s a very special dish. I used the
fattest one.”
“The
fattest what?” For some reason, Bright couldn’t take a bite until he knew what
he was eating.
“My
fattest son, of course.” The blond-haired man laughed. “We have no choice when
the game is scarce. He was always eating so much and catching so little, but
now through his sacrifice, he will make us all proud by filling the whole
village.”
Bright
felt light-headed. He dropped his spoon and it splattered in the stew. This man
had to be joking. “You killed your son and made him for dinner?”
The
man frowned, but took a large bite. “Yes. It was sad for a little while. He
cried a lot and begged me not to kill him, but he never complained when we fed
him his sister.”
Bright’s
stomach turned. He leaped from the table. He was going to be sick.
“Where
are you going?” the man asked.
Everyone
in the village continued to gobble down the stew as if it were nothing. Bright
felt the disgust in his belly quickly turn to burning rage.
“This
has to end.” Bright’s body started to glow; the fireplace behind the man
exploded and ran up the building.
Like
the man had ignored his children’s screams, Bright would ignore the screams of
the villagers as his flames burned them to ash.

humans take something from him. They’ve destroyed his family and he has
no doubt that they’d like to destroy him, too.
